Sunshine or rain, The Humanitarians were determined to make a sustainable difference and did so by delivering boiled eggs to the homeless in the CBD area near the Castle in Cape Town this past Saturday. The aim of this campaign was to educate and advocate that eating better can promote feeling full for longer as we know that it is a daily struggle for the homeless with regards to food. This forms part of our mission to get South Africa eating correctly and it starts with a simple egg. Eggs are a huge source of all the correct proteins and fats and by starting your day correctly you can be sure that you will be full for longer periods and more energized.

We set out at 8.30am with the knowledge from our Chief Community Engagement Officer, Noel that the individuals would be starting their day early as well. Four members of our team joined us as well as Fabian, a fellow humanitarian who wanted to make a difference. With eggs in hand as well socks we set out to start engaging with the community which is something we pride ourselves on as Humanitarians. We then provided the people with two eggs each as well as a warm pair of socks which had been left over from our previous campaign in Bonteheuwel. At 10.00am we had completed our run delivering eggs and socks as far as the CT train station to all individuals including children and families.

It was an exciting morning and was a huge success in terms of meeting new people and engaging with familiar faces from our previous campaign. We also beared witness to the harsh street life by observing drug exchanges as well as engaging with people that were on drugs. It was a learning experience for all and we commend those that joined us. It took courage and determination to do what we did this past Saturday.

Toxic charity is something that we don’t believe in and rather we believe that the community has much more to gain from educating them on how to sustain themselves and their families in every aspect. Special thanks to our sponsor the Lord Nelson Inn Hotel in Simon’s Town – without their generous donation, the day would not have been possible.

“It was a wonderful morning listening to stories of the less fortunate and it inspires us to make the world a better place, one hand print at a time”
